Active shooter survival training has become a necessity in our society and in our lives here in Tampa, Clearwater, and St. Petersburg. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) defines those “engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area” as the minds behind mass murder events. The DHS adds that, “in most cases,
What is Active Shooter Survival Training?
Active shooter survival training with FORTIS IEP is the best way to learn how to recognize an assault, and it can be done right here in Clearwater, Tampa, and St. Petersburg. Most attacks occur in confined or highly populated areas, and more often than not, the assailant uses a firearm. Trying to make sense of individuals or groups that engage in the senseless killing of innocent people is impossible. It is an event that can happen anywhere at any time, and even the Bay area is not immune.
Previous incidents have occurred in:
- Retail establishments
- Corporate headquarters
- Movie theaters
- Government/military facilities
- Locations where the general public gather
The episode occurs so fast that law enforcement is unable to respond and intercede. Attacks are lethal and take place in a short period of time, so security personnel and employees have to be prepared to recognize and respond, mentally and physically, to a situation.
How Can Active Shooting Incidents Be Prevented?
We are not without tools to prevent these incidents from occurring, and active shooter survival training provides novices with the information they need to recognize a potential situation. There are often warning signs that employees or supervisors can identify that indicate that someone is experiencing problems in their life. These include:
- Increased usage or abuse of alcohol/drugs
These are all indicators that an individual is experiencing problems that could lead to workplace violence. Intervention is the key, and it’s important to get medical professionals and law enforcement involved to prevent an incident from occurring. As recently as 2014, there have been episodes in the Tampa and St. Petersburg area; a gunman opened fire and injured two people at Clearwater Beach in May of 2014. Sadly, no community is free from the possibility of a malicious attack, so it’s best to be prepared.
When an assailant emerges, employees and staff need to know how to recognize and respond to the sound of gunfire or suspected gunfire of an assailant. Employees need to be able to:
- Initiate action to reduce the chances of becoming a casualty.
- Direct the actions of guests, customers, or those with disabilities to save as many lives as possible.
With the huge number of tourists and other visitors in the Tampa, Clearwater, and St. Petersburg areas, it’s imperative that employees are prepared with active shooter survival training.
In 2014, the Federal Bureau of Investigation released a study regarding open-fire incidents. Special Agent Katherine Schweit of the FBI stated she hopes the study “demonstrates the need not only for enhanced preparation on the part of law enforcement and other first responders, but also for civilians to be engaged in discussions and coaching on decisions they’d have to make” in these situations. Employees in St. Petersburg, Tampa, and Clearwater need to understand how to respond to an incident like this and practice their plans of action. Active shooter survival training is the most in-depth and informative way to educate the public and to prepare them for the unthinkable.
